Definition of a customized Data Governance roadmap
Insight
The Autostrade per l’Italia Group is among Europe’s leading concessionaires for the construction and management of toll motorways, with around 3,000 km of network managed in Italy. With over 70 years of experience, it now has four motorway concession companies and eight companies operating services ancillary to the core business, which play a key role in implementing the group’s impressive transformation plan. In order to manage the lifecycle of Italian mobility infrastructures in an integrated manner and to meet its long-term strategic objectives, the Group decided to embark on a Data Governance path to ensure effective management of data resources within the organisation.
Solution
We assisted the Group in defining and implementing a Data Governance framework with an agile approach, taking into account its processes and corporate organisational structure.
In the first design phase of assessment, through targeted interviews with key business and IT figures, it was possible to define the initial level of maturity relative to the four pillars of Data Governance: Organisation, Methodologies, Technologies and Change Management, prioritising the areas with the greatest perceived gap (Metadata Management, Data Quality Management).
Furthermore, in order to identify the products most in line with and supportive of the group’s technological environment, we initiated a software selection process that would allow us to select the most suitable tools to implement the project. We then supported the group in the adoption, automation and integration of the selected tools with existing systems and reporting instruments.
The framework was implemented by gradually expanding the processes to the various business domains and by involving users at all stages, including through training courses on the Data Governance methodologies adopted and the logics applied to the selected tools.
Benefit
The implementation of this project and the deployment of a customised Data Governance framework not only assisted the company in its Digital Transformation processes, but also made it possible to:
- consolidate potentially critical areas, including: Data Quality Management, Data Cataloging, Metadata Management, Master Data Management;
- facilitate data mapping and management in such a way as to ensure cross-visibility and widespread knowledge within the organisation (data democratisation);
- extract added value from metadata from a Data Fabric perspective;
- reduce the time-to-market of products thanks to the availability of technical and business metadata and dedicated tools for their querying;
- enable business users to perform self-service Analytics.
